David Tennant a Roma

Forget London, forget Cardiff ... in Season 4, "Doctor Who" goes international and production has temporarily relocated to Rome for the next historically based episode, which will most likely see The Doctor (David Tennant) and Donna (Catherine Tate) come face to face with Caesar.

According to British tabloid paper The Sun, the ancient Rome episode is currently in production in Italy at the Cinecitta Studios (the same studios that were used for the production of the epic series "Rome") in order to re-create the majesty of the ancient empire on a scale that the series has yet to experience.

Unfortunately, however, the occasion has hit a rather large problem after expensive BBC equipment was destroyed in a fire that broke out in the filming studio last week.

"It was a huge blaze," an insider told The Sun. "At one point, it looked like the whole studio was a goner. It threw a real spanner in the works for the 'Doctor Who' team. They're planning an episode where The Doctor goes back in time to ancient Rome and thought it would be perfect to use the set. Filming in Rome has finished so it wasn't being used."

Although a great deal of the BBC's equipment was wiped out by the fire, most of the crucial components were salvaged, which means that production on the episode can continue. The damage is currently being cleared with production set to resume as soon as possible.

To be, or not to be the Danish prince, that is the question for Mr Tennant, who starts shooting his third series as the Time Lord in Cardiff on Monday.

The plan being developed by RSC artistic chief Michael Boyd is for Mr Tennant to play Hamlet in a production he wants to direct next summer. The exact timing will depend on whether the actor will do a fourth batch of episodes as the Converse All Stars-sporting Doctor.

Tennant has been offered several high-profile TV, film and stage parts since his interpretation of Dr Who found so much favour with audiences and critics. Indeed, he recently completed filming a TV movie for HBO called Einstein And Eddington opposite Andy Serkis and Rebeca Hall.

I understand he's minded to give one of the Bard's most famous characters a try.

For starters, Tennant has spoken in the past of his desire to play Hamlet. Plus he has worked with Boyd before (he cast Tennant as Romeo in Romeo And Juliet six years ago). And he evidently enjoys being part of the RSC, having acted in six plays for them.

Tennant last appeared on the stage four years ago in the searing play Pillowman at the National Theatre, although he must have been disappointed that he wasn't able to go with it when it was produced on Broadway.

People associated with the RSC and Tennant are trying to keep the Hamlet talks under wraps in case the deal, which hasn't been completed, unravels.

If Hamlet does happen, and my sense is that it will, it will have a huge built-in audience.

There are a lot of Dr Who fans out there.

Kylie has been seeing an acting coach in preparation for the role
Kylie will be joining David Tennant for the episode, Voyage of the Damned, which starts filming this month in Cardiff.

The production team has also confirmed the storyline will follow on directly from the ending of series three where viewers witnessed The Titanic crash through the Tardis walls.

The episode has been written by Doctor Who's executive producer and head writer Russell T Davies.

He said: "We are delighted and excited to announce that Kylie Minogue will be joining the Doctor. Doctor Who Christmas specials are always a joy and we feel very confident that this will be the most ambitious and best Christmas episode yet."

Kylie added: "It is an incredible thrill to be joining David and the entire Dr Who production for this year's Christmas speical.

The fourth series of Doctor Who - featuring two assistants - will return in spring next year.

Freema Agyeman, 28, who was rumoured to be facing the axe from the BBC1 revival, will be absent from the first half of the fourth series.

The mystery new companion will join the Doctor for the entire 13-week run of the next series and is expected to be announced shortly.

Tate, who is best known for her comedy creation, apathetic teenager Lauren and her catchphrase "am I bovvered?", played Donna in the show's last Christmas special.

She said she was looking forward to working with Tennant again.

"I am delighted to be returning to Doctor Who. I had a blast last Christmas and look forward to travelling again through time and space with that nice man from Gallifrey."

The comedian is set to reprise her role as runaway bride Donna

In the episode The Runaway Bride, Tate's character Donna was a woman who mysteriously vanished as she prepared to marry her boyfriend in a ceremony on Christmas Eve and reappeared, much to her astonishment, in the Tardis.

As the Tardis raced to the church, it was revealed that Donna was the key to an ancient alien plan to destroy the Earth.

Bovvered: Catherine Tate as her hugely popular character Lauren
The episode ended with the Doctor inviting Donna to travel with him - an invitation she declined.

Executive producer and writer Russell T Davies said: "Catherine was an absolute star in The Runaway Bride and we are delighted that one of Britain's greatest talents has agreed to join us for the fourth series.

"Viewers can expect more ambitious storylines and a whole host of guest stars in 2008."

The fourth series of Doctor Who goes into production this month and will hit UK screens in Spring 2008.
